The sub-genus Echinoramaria has echinate spores and generally occurs in duff. Generally Lentoramaria and Echinoramaria are small and simple branched and often arise from a single thin stipe or have multiple stipes arising from the duff. The other two sub-genera ( Ramaria and Laeticolora) are terricolous and rarely bind the substrate to the basidiocarp. Two of the sub-genera ( Lentoramaria and Echinoramaria) are generally lignicolous or occur in duff and often have mycelial threads binding the substrate closely to the base of the basidiocarp. The coral fungi within the genus Ramaria is currently divided into 4 sub-genera.
